Application requirements

Applicants to the MSNS degree program must meet the minimum requirements for graduate study at the University of Texas at Austin. Admission requirements to the Graduate School and the graduate program in Nutritional Sciences are as follows:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited United States institution OR proof of equivalent training at an institute outside the United States. The Graduate and International Admissions Center (GIAC) will determine eligibility for admission in consultation with prospective graduate programs.
  2. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division course work (junior- and senior-level courses) and in any graduate work already completed.
  3. Completion of the GRE or MCAT/PCAT/OAT/DAT test is required for admission(GRE waived for Fall 2021).
  4. A satisfactory score (minimum score of 83 required) on the TOEFL exam (international applicants only). For more information, please see: Graduate School Admissions for International Students.
  5. Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic and professional potential.
  6. Personal statement regarding research and professional experience, goals, and how completion of the program will further those goals.
  7. Personal resume including relevant work and experience.
  8. Applicants should have a background in nutrition or related science and/or meet the pre-requisite coursework for admissions (described below).

  • The GRE requirement will be waived for all applicants for the Fall 2021 semester. Students may continue to submit official GRE scores for consideration, but they will not be required to do so. Providing GRE scores can bolster your application if there are aspects of your application that you feel may be not as competitive as others. Students are also able to request a waiver from the Director of the program with appropriate submission of their current MCAT, PCAT, OAT, or DAT score. Some additional waivers can be provided for learners that have earned a graduate clinical/science degree (e.g., MD, PA, DDS) if they are currently practicing in their clinical field.   • You can complete certain prerequisite coursework for this nutrition program through a variety of avenues. Local community colleges typically offer general nutrition courses as well as organic chemistry and anatomy & physiology. You may also take them through online programs. The biochemistry course would need to be obtained from a four-year institution or through edX.
